Department History
The Cahaba Valley Fire and EMR District was established in 1978, as a volunteer organization serving a largely undeveloped section of the Highway 280 corridor in northeastern Shelby County, Alabama. It was formed to meet the growing need for emergency services in a rapidly developing area.
The district initially relied solely on volunteer firefighters, but as the community grew, the demand for professional services increased. In 1987, the first paid firefighters were hired, and a paid fire chief was appointed in 1990.
In 1993, the district expanded its services to include the Rex Lake Fire District, further solidifying its position as a leading provider of emergency services in the region.
Over the years, the Cahaba Valley Fire and EMR District has continued to evolve and grow, adapting to the changing needs of the community. It has become a well-respected organization known for its commitment to providing professional and compassionate service to its residents.
Today, the district operates four fire stations and provides a wide range of emergency services, including fire suppression, emergency medical response, motor vehicle accident response, and public education. It remains dedicated to its mission of protecting life and property through professional and compassionate service.
